The loftiness in the fibre of Woollen Spun yarn means air is trapped within the yarn making it warm to wear, it also is known all over the world for its use in Fair Isle knitting because of the way the fibres interact with each other. Woolen spun fibre is carded and this means the fibres are still overlapping having been carded back and forth over each other, this creates a very airy fibre which when spun is warm and springy. It is less soft than many luxury wools such as merino or cashmere but because shetland yarn doesn’t have guard hairs like some other yarns, it isn’t very prickly, and can feel comfortable as you wear it. That means Shetland wool is terrific for warm and toasty sweaters. Shetland wool is known for being durable and hardy, as the climate on the northern island can get quite cold. Its long staple length resists pilling better than other fine wools.
